Ten Years at Tanglefoot!

Graduating at the head of her class from the Faculty of Physical Education at UBC in 1991, Heather Bourchier studied Human Kinetics with a specialty in Health and Fitness. She has over thirty years of experience in the fitness industry, including five years with the Provincial Fitness Council developing certification standards in BC, and holds a number of advanced certifications in fitness, as well as strength and conditioning, and functional and rehabilitative training.

In the summer of 1996, Heather moved to Kimberley from Vancouver, where she was working as a Fitness Programmer at the city’s busiest municipal facility in Kitsilano. Born and raised in Rossland, BC, she was thrilled to land a regional program coordinator position with the Canadian Red Cross and return to the Kootenays to raise her daughter in a mountain ski town. Finding it difficult balancing work and motherhood however, she took a leave of absence in 1999, and instead focused on her own fitness business; providing fitness instruction, personal training, and regional instructor training courses and workshops.

In 2004, when the Pentecostal church on Archibald Street came up for sale, Heather dreamed of purchasing the building and opening “the coolest Training Centre in the Kootenays”. It was a huge undertaking, but by the summer of 2005 the deal was completed and the renovations began. The main studio was finished first to accommodate classes that started in October and by January 2006, the Tanglefoot Training Centre officially opened its doors as Kimberley’s first, full service fitness and wellness facility – with four separate training studios and an extensive line up of classes, programs, and personal training services.

Tanglefoot’s services are based on current and relevant training methods that are effective and appropriate for the people doing them. The business is founded on professional standards, honesty and integrity, knowledge and expertise, community development and personal responsibility. Tanglefoot’s mission is to provide the highest quality programs, services, and training experiences to help clients improve not only their fitness, function, and performance, but also their health and well-being.

Even people who are not “gym people” feel comfortable at Tanglefoot. The warm and welcoming atmosphere comes partially from the fact that it is housed in a renovated church and largely from the wonderful people who train there, the incredible staff who work there, and the exceptional faculty of instructors, teachers, and trainers who provide services there.

Ten years later, Tanglefoot is in the process of re-branding and will soon be revealing its’ new logo and launching an updated and more interactive website. In 2016 Heather plans to implement Functional Movement Screening, and introduce new Olympic lifting and Functional training programs, along with an expanded schedule of Pilates based programs, and personal/small group services.

“We are also working hard on our biggest goal, which is an expansion of the building,” says Heather. The concept has always been part of the vision but Heather started the ball rolling this past summer by announcing the idea to her members and getting many letters of support for the first grant proposal that was submitted in September.

The new design is spacious, with high ceilings and lots of natural light. It includes an open walkway from front to back and a new heating, ventilation and air conditioning system. It will increase the cardio training area and triple the size of the weight training space which will primarily contain functional training equipment such as dumbbells, kettlebells, chin up bars, squat racks and an Olympic lifting platform. The business focus at this time is on strengthening the Tanglefoot brand, growing the membership, and creating the financial foundation for the project to unfold.
